One of them has no sword - striking it will reveal an illusory wall. In a room up there, you'll find a bunch of knight statues. Now get to the Ringed Inner Wall bonfire again and take the elevator down, jumping off halfway down, through the opening where you went for the ring earlier. Talk to him, exhaust his dialogue, and continue forward. Make your way across and you'll find Lapp sitting on a rock. Head back inside the church and now you can use that fallen tower as a bridge.
